History since 1940
The City Stadium, in its present form, has been functioning since 2015, and its grand opening was marked by an international football match between the Czech Republic and Serbia.
The original stadium for football and athletics was completed in 1940, and a number of significant sports meetings and matches were held there over the course of its rich history.
Two 10-km world records were set at the stadium by the most famous Czech athlete, Emil Zátopek, and dozens of Olympic winners and world champions have appeared there. The players of TJ Vítkovice football club celebrated the Czechoslovak league title there in the 1985/86 season.
Home of FC Baník Ostrava
The stadium is the home of FC Baník Ostrava and MFK Vítkovice, as well as the venue of the Ostrava Golden Spike, the most significant athletics meeting in the Czech Republic.
The City Stadium is currently one of the sporting facilities owned by VÍTKOVICE ARÉNA, a.s. The stadium complex consists of the main stadium with an athletics track and a capacity of approximately 15,000 spectators, a secondary warm-up stadium with an artificial grass pitch and a shot put field.
